Jade Plant
Overview
The Jade Plant (Crassula ovata) is one of the most popular succulents for good reason. With its thick, fleshy leaves and tree-like growth pattern, it brings a tropical feel to any indoor space. It’s incredibly forgiving and can thrive in a variety of conditions, making it perfect for beginners.
Lighting Requirements
Bright, indirect light is ideal for Jade Plants. They prefer at least 3-4 hours of sunlight daily. If grown indoors, place them near a south-facing or west-facing window. In darker conditions, they may become leggy and weak.
Outdoor Growing
- In warm zones, Jade Plants can be grown outdoors year-round
- Provide afternoon shade in very hot climates
- They’re excellent as patio plants in pots
Watering Schedule
Water thoroughly but infrequently. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
- Spring/Summer: Water every 2-3 weeks
- Fall/Winter: Water every 3-4 weeks or less
- Testing soil: Stick your finger 1 inch into the soil—if it’s dry, it’s time to water
Pro tip: Underwatering is better than overwatering. These plants store water in their leaves and prefer drier conditions.
- Best watering method: Bottom watering is preferred over top watering. Place the pot in 1–3 cm of water for about 5–15 minutes, then remove it and let excess water drain completely. This helps prevent water from sitting between the leaves, which can easily lead to rot. Only do this when the soil is fully dry.

Soil Requirements
Use well-draining cactus or succulent soil. A standard potting mix can be amended with perlite or sand to improve drainage. The pot must have drainage holes.
Temperature & Humidity
- Ideal temperature: 15-25°C (59-77°F)
- Humidity: Low humidity is fine; they actually prefer dry air
- Cold tolerance: Can survive down to 5°C (41°F), but growth slows significantly
- Heat tolerance: Can handle temperatures up to 35°C (95°F) with proper watering
Common Problems & Solutions
Leaf Drop
- Usually caused by overwatering or cold temperatures
- Reduce watering and ensure warm conditions
Leggy Growth
- Indicates insufficient light
- Move the plant to a brighter location
Pest Issues
- Mealybugs and scale insects occasionally appear
- Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap
Propagation
Jade Plants are incredibly easy to propagate:
- Leaf Propagation: Remove a healthy leaf, let it dry for 2-3 days, place on moist soil
- Stem Cuttings: Take a 2-3 inch cutting, let dry, then place in soil
- Time to roots: Typically 2-4 weeks
Seasonal Care
Spring/Summer
- Peak growing season
- Water more frequently
- Fertilize monthly with diluted succulent fertilizer
Fall/Winter
- Growth slows significantly
- Reduce watering to almost nothing
- Move away from direct heat sources
- Minimal or no fertilizing
Styling Tips
- Jade Plants develop a beautiful trunk over time—stake them appropriately
- They look stunning in ceramic or clay pots that complement their aesthetic
- Excellent for offices, living rooms, or windowsills
- Can live for decades, becoming a treasured heirloom plant
Final Notes
With proper care, your Jade Plant will reward you with years of growth and beauty. Remember: when in doubt, underwater rather than overwater. These resilient plants are nearly impossible to kill when treated with benign neglect!
