Moonstone
Overview
Pachyphytum Oviferum, commonly known as Moonstone, is a delightful succulent that gets its name from its plump, powdery blue-green leaves that resemble small eggs or moonstones. This compact plant forms attractive rosettes and is perfect for beginners looking to add some unique texture to their succulent collection. It’s relatively easy to care for and can thrive in a variety of indoor conditions.
Light Requirements
Moonstone succulents prefer bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct sunlight:
- Ideal condition: Bright indirect light with 4-6 hours of morning sun
- Indoor growing: Place near an east or south-facing window with filtered light
- Outdoor growing: Partial shade to full sun in cooler climates
- Low light effects: Leaves may become elongated and lose their powdery coating
- Tip: Protect from intense afternoon sun in hot climates to prevent leaf burn
Watering Schedule
Like most succulents, Moonstone prefers to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot:
- Growing season (Spring/Summer): Water every 2-3 weeks
- Dormancy (Fall/Winter): Water every 3-4 weeks or less
- Overwatering signs: Leaves become soft, wrinkled, or translucent
- Watering method: Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom, then allow soil to dry completely
- Test: Insert your finger 1-2 inches into the soil—if dry, it’s time to water
- Best watering method: Bottom watering is preferred over top watering. Place the pot in 1–3 cm of water for about 5–15 minutes, then remove it and let excess water drain completely. This helps prevent water from sitting between the leaves, which can easily lead to rot. Only do this when the soil is fully dry.

Soil Requirements
Excellent drainage is crucial for Moonstone plants:
- Best option: Cactus or succulent soil mix
- DIY mix: Regular potting soil mixed with 50% perlite or pumice for drainage
- Pot type: Use pots with drainage holes; terra cotta is ideal as it wicks away excess moisture
- Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant outgrows its container
Temperature & Humidity
- Optimal temperature: 18-24°C (65-75°F)
- Humidity: Low to moderate; they prefer dry air over humid conditions
- Cold tolerance: Can survive down to 5°C (41°F) but protect from frost
- Heat tolerance: Tolerates up to 30°C (86°F) with proper watering
Propagation
Moonstone is easy to propagate through leaf cuttings:
- Gently twist off a healthy leaf from the base
- Allow the cut end to callous for 1-2 days
- Place on well-draining soil and mist lightly
- Roots should form in 2-4 weeks
Common Issues
- Leaf drop: Usually due to overwatering or sudden temperature changes
- Powdery mildew: Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering
- Pests: Watch for mealybugs; treat with insecticidal soap if needed
